- Marlow gets a job at a business called the Company as a pilot on a steamboat.
- He visits the Company headquarters & then travels to Africa up the Congo River.
- He witnesses the grove where the blacks are to die.
- He meets the Accountant who mentions the name of Kurtz
- After hearing so much about Kurtz he is so eager to meet him, where he also learns that he is ill
- Marlow heads up the river with the Pilgrims & just before arriving at the Inner Station his steamboat is attacked by natives.
- The helmsman who was steering the ship is killed with a spear.
- As he arrives to the Inner Station he is approached by a Russian who informs him that Kurtz is alive, but very ill.
- This is when Marlow is finding out about the real Kurtz & his dark side, & he also learns that Kurtz called for the attack.
- Kurtz is too ill to stay alive & Marlow soon becomes ill as well, but survives. Kurtz gives Marlow his papers to keep safe.
- As Marlow returns to Europe he gives Kurt's papers to different people, & visits the Intended last to tell her a lie by saying that Kurt's last words were her name.
